A retaining wall is structural, not decorative — it holds back soil and moves water where you want it. We build in engineered block for a crisp, uniform look, or in natural boulders for something that reads as part of the landscape. Both get proper drainage tile and backfill, because a wall that can't drain is a wall that eventually leans.
Water pressure behind a wall is what pushes it over. Drain tile and clean gravel backfill are non‑negotiable, even though nobody ever sees them.
Block is crisp and engineered and terraces neatly in tight spaces. Boulders suit sloped or wooded lots and look like they were always there.
Wall height, soil type, and what's above it determine whether you need geogrid reinforcement. We build to the site, not to a guess.

Block gives you a crisp, uniform, engineered look and is easy to terrace in tight spaces. Boulders read as natural and rugged, and often suit a sloped or wooded lot better. Both hold soil equally well when built with proper drainage — it's mostly an aesthetic and site‑fit decision.
Taller walls need engineering — geogrid reinforcement, and above a certain height, a permit and an engineer's stamp. We'll tell you up front which category your project falls into rather than discovering it halfway through.
Sometimes. A leaning wall almost always means water is trapped behind it or the base failed. We'll look at it and tell you honestly whether it's a repair or a rebuild — rebuilding on a bad base just buys you a few years.
